Of all of the five senses, I think that smell may be the most important to me. For my entire life, I’ve had a serious aversion to the idea that I might smell unpleasant, even after a hard day’s work or a session at the gym. It’s just not for me. I like to smell nice.

After reading that, you will have a reason to believe that I have a fully stocked storeroom of colognes, perfumes, and sensory additions to spruce up the wardrobe with the seasons. Well, I hate to burst your bubble. I have a pretty good roster of candles and incense in the house, but I have never been all that much of a cologne guy.

Growing up, cologne or any kind of scented spray wasn’t really allowed around the house. I have a few family members with sensitivities who would come over often and frequently leave with migraines, which didn’t do much for our family’s social status. That being said, I kept it pretty sparse with lightly scented deodorant and made sure that my body washes and shampoos were doing the right job. I hadn’t put much thought into what a good cologne could do for my market value until later on in life.

Scent and Memory

Once I had a little more exposure, it started to click. Smell is one of the most powerful agents of memory. I don’t have to explain this. You know the phenomenon when you smell your mother’s cooking, fresh-cut grass to welcome in the summer, or your second-grade school building and the nostalgia that comes with it. (now, I spent most of my first day of second grade in tears, I’m sure, so that’s not a great memory, but you get the point.)

When it comes to my personal preference, I am above all else looking for simplicity and cleanliness. I do not want to evoke memories of the middle school locker room and I do not want to smell like a generic branded experience made for men who don’t want to have to think about it. Complexity is great, duality is better, but simplicity is king.

I think Blu Atlas hit all of those notes (hah!) with Atlantis. Out of the bottle, the smell is not overwhelming, but calm in the way it lingers out. I like that. While not overpowering, the fragrance is bright while also feeling deep and rich (this, my friends, is duality!).

As for the specific profiles at play, the initial cleanliness comes from heavy top notes of lemon and bergamot, which are both familiar fragrances for freshness on the axis of earthiness, adding to the appeal of a fragrance designed for men without being outright and flagrantly “manly.” The tropical inspiration really kicks in as the wear progresses, employing lavender and stonefruit (like peaches and apricots) to evoke a warm sense of adventure. The lingering base notes are where the fragrance really hammers home the vision of long-lasting adventure, pulling in oak moss, musk, and violet to once again utilize duality to tell a story equally of tranquility and adventure.

In short, this is a home run for men looking for a distinct smell that blends in nicely with what you’re comfortable with. You can’t help but pick up on the inspiration once you smell for yourself, but we’ll get to that in a little bit.

Blu Atlas Atlantis Is a Crowd Pleaser

It took befriending someone who was deep in the world of natural perfumery to really bring to light that cologne goes far beyond what you can find behind the counter at the gas station.

Scent is a complicated industry, as perfumers must work hard to please both the market as a whole and elevate the individual experience of each user as they integrate the product into their daily life. This is not an easy task, and anyone in the game of smell will tell you this firsthand.

This reality at play makes it even more impressive that Blu Atlas has made such a crowd-pleaser with Atlantis. What I mean by a crowd pleaser is that the scent is approachable from many different access points of masculinity, while still reading as unique to the individual wearer.

A few years ago, anything marketed specifically to men in the body care and personal grooming world was basically just flat-marketed as “manly.” Not much distinction there, if you ask me. I am happy to theorize that perhaps the day and age of men’s goods equaling lumberjack caricature might be behind us, and Blu Atlas has risen to the challenge with speed and agility.

Once you get a whiff for yourself, you’ll see what I’m saying. Atlantis could be worn just as comfortably by a 5’5 computer programmer with a pocket protector as it would be by a mechanic looking to cover up a post-shift smell of motor oil.

Okay, those are caricatures too, but I’m thinking we’re likely on the same track. The win here is that the subtlety and cleanness of Atlantis make it malleable to however you plan on wearing it, something that very few colognes manage to accomplish on their own.

After a relatively short time on the market, Blu Atlas has gotten some impressive press and reviews from big names that know what they’re talking about. In fact, Forbes (a name you’ve likely heard in the world of men’s fashion and body care) has said that Atlantis is the “#1 best men’s cologne.”

I mean, do you need more than that? You can’t say it more directly than they have. You better get a move on, though, we’re almost through with 2022! All jokes aside, I think these reviews will be standing the test of time.

As much as we all try to get out and experience the world, unfortunately, most of us don’t live the kind of lifestyle where we’re getting the amount of adventure we’d really wish for ourselves. It’s important to find that refuge and inspiration where and when you can, and in ways that make sense with your day to day.

In short, it’s hard to look for healthy routines when most mainstream products are muddled down with unnecessary and potentially harmful chemicals.

This is where Blu Atlas comes into the fold. In having the opportunity to check out their full-spectrum line of body care products, I did a little research on them before cracking open any packaging.

The biggest draw is that the company sources over 96% of its ingredients from natural sources. Woah! With star-studded reviews on their site from major men’s-focused publications alongside tight branding and an elegant brand feel, I am eager to say that I was sold on testing them out before even touching the product. But despite my excitement, I’m still dealing with the reality that I know little to nothing in terms of what makes good skincare good versus the alternative.

Luckily, I have some help. My girlfriend is a recent and proud graduate of esthetician school (which I am told is more than just pimple-popping videos) and is raring to go on her new career helping people figure out solutions for unhappy skin and devising preventative methods to keep things looking great and feeling healthy.

I asked her to sit down with me and go through the Blu Atlas line (each product for sale on their website, to be specific) and help me notate some of the key differentiators in their product’s make-up. Of course, we tried out each product too (that’s the fun part).

After getting gray-masked and squeaky clean, these are our notes on the Blu Atlas collection and what stands out to us as surefire wins for your skin.

Blu Atlas Atlantis Cologne

• Alright, let’s start off with a first-inning home run – Blu Atlas’ signature cologne fragrance, Atlantis, is a knockout. The scent, with layered tones of bergamot, lemon, violet, and musk, is evocative of adventure and inspired by the experience of coastal Bali. In quick terms, the fragrance is light while having a pretty incredible depth, utilizing the strength of floral notes without relying on them heavily.
• If you aren’t immediately enticed by the smell, the elegant packaging will certainly do it for you. Packaged in a matte black bottle and inside its own box to open, it’s a standout on your top shelf for sure.

Blu Atlas Body Wash

• Blu Atlas’ stab at a body wash is all I’m looking for – a nice lather, light scent, and nothing too overpowering, with a light sugar exfoliant to boot.
• An outstanding universal ingredient found in Blu Atlas’ Body Wash is Green Tea, which is rich in antioxidants, green tea is known in skincare for its ability to help heal redness. Aloe, another star, also helps to moisturize and provide antioxidants.
• This product covers almost everything that the other products are not designed for. This will support healthy-looking skin not just on the face, but everywhere on the body!

Blu Atlas Shampoo and Conditioner

• Can’t have body wash without shampoo and conditioner. These two complete the shower trifecta, unified with one scent profile and naturally-derived ingredients that work together smoothly.
• The jojoba oil (the main ingredient) in the shampoo gives amazing nutrients, aloe helps to soften the hair, and Saw Palmetto which helps thicken your hair. In short, the shampoo’s job is to add volume and hydration to your hair. 
• Blu Atlas has employed the help of argan oil (used to shine and smooth hair), white tea (to help moisturize and condition the scalp), and barley protein (rich in proteins, leaving hair shiny and soft to the touch) in the conditioner. Altogether, the combo is anti-inflammatory and will support scalp health!

Blu Atlas Deodorant

• Deodorant can be hit or miss, especially when it comes to one that uses natural ingredients versus what you may be used to from the deodorant aisle. This one is a good one – from application to the end of the day, I found Blu Atlas Deodorant to support me through whatever I threw at it.
• It’s formulated with volcanic ash, which is highly absorbent. That’s a win for deodorant! Another interesting ingredient in Blu Atlas’ deodorant is horsetail extract – with anti-inflammatory properties, it calms and soothes skin irritations.

Blu Atlas Eye Stick

• The Blu Atlas Eye Stick is a really cool product that I (and maybe you) likely wouldn’t have considered before now. This lip-balm-shaped tube will brighten, reduce puffiness, and protect from free radicals. There’s a nice cooling effect on the application with the metal roller ball, and the product comes with no real noticeable scent for easy use. Gotta keep those eyes safe!
• When it comes to ingredients, this is a well-rounded product. It’s just packed with the good stuff, like rose water, which helps reduce puffiness.

Blu Atlas Aftershave and Shave Cream

• I’m a big beard kind of guy, so I rarely find a use for shaving cream and aftershave, but these options from Blu Atlas have a refreshing and calming scent that is not evocative of the aftershave of the past.
• The big selling point of the shave cream is the ingredients that bring strong antioxidants to the forefront of the fight – they’re there to hydrate your skin pre-shave and protect the barrier functions of the skin.
• On the aftershave front, it’s loaded with ingredients that will moisturize and soothe the skin- again, we see rose flower water in this case to help with wound healing (think razor burn or bumps).
  

Blu Atlas Face Moisturizer

• Blu Atlas has another top score in the “well-rounded product” category. Nice and thick, the Face Moisturizer melts into the skin quickly and leaves your face feeling smooth and nourished with a minimal scent profile. Plenty to keep you moisturized and stay moisturized but also contains ingredients that benefit your skin more than just moisture. 
• This one is all about the vitamins! Vitamins E, C, and A are all well represented in the Face Moisturizer, and working hard to help support a healthy skin barrier.

Blu Atlas Face Cleanser

• Volcanic ash, a primary ingredient in the Face Cleanser from Blu Atlas, is great at absorbing excess oil while having hydration and soothing effects. This is definitely a winning combo for a daily face wash!
• The cleanser has an earthy, natural scent to it, feels nice during the application, and leaves skin feeling clean without feeling stripped.
• Pomegranate seed oil, another active ingredient, is an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and has anti-aging properties (but no, you can not turn back time).

Blu Atlas Exfoliating Scrub

• Alright, everyone has used a bad exfoliating scrub in their lifetime, and there’s no shame in admitting it. Blu Atlas uses walnut shell powder, a much better alternative to microbeads (which can damage the skin, is better for the environment as well as being an effective exfoliant). This part is important – exfoliation helps remove any build-up on the skin allowing better product penetration for all of the other products they offer, making them more effective.
• Bamboo is a nice addition to the ingredient roster – it’s antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory and will soothe inflamed or irritated skin (so, great for acne-prone or easily upset skin!). Hibiscus also brings a lovely smell, as well as adding a rich creaminess to the formulation.

Blu Atlas Face Mask

• Okay, boys, we love a face mask. You can’t deny it. This one is the real deal. It left our skin feeling soft and smooth, without feeling tight like cheap grocery store masks tend to do. I have been hesitant to use face masks in the past on their silly color alone, but this sick matte black color dries to an even cooler gray.
• Ingredient-wise, clay, and charcoal are power players to draw out and dry out blemishes, while goji berry will help nourish and promote even skin tone.

Blu Atlas Vitamin C Serum

• I hate to choose favorites, but we saved the best for last. This Vitamin C Serum got the strongest “if you don’t use it, I will” response. The Vitamin C Serum helps neutralize free radicals on the skin (which causes skin damage and premature aging) through the use of four active ingredients, all in the top 4 slots of the product.
• The serum is easy to use in dropper bottles to avoid contamination from bacteria on your hands or face, and sinks into the skin really nicely without feeling oily. The gentle citrus smell right from the bottle is really pleasant but fades quickly to allow your other fragrance choices to shine brighter.

Final Thoughts on the Blu Atlas System

In short, the team consensus over here is that Blu Atlas is indeed an incredibly thoughtfully put-together brand, and we applaud their effort to a) source most ingredients naturally and b) employ all ingredients intentionally. To our investigation, there really is nothing in there that isn’t directly beneficial to the skin.

Another big win across the board for Blu Atlas – most of the active ingredients fall pretty high up on ingredient lists, meaning that they are the top contents of the product. In short – you’re not paying for a Vitamin C serum where the Vitamin C itself is the last ingredient on the list. 

I think the biggest win for Blu Atlas revisits the earlier discussion on efficiency – if you are willing to put in the time, you can make your routine as simple or complex as you would like, based on your preferences and specific skincare needs. In this house, the face cleanser, Vitamin C serum, and face moisturizer build the core roster, thereby starting a foundation to build on beyond that. This is a concise, easy-to-use line while having options to up your game should you like.

Last summer was one for the books. Pre-pandemic, my life came with a lot of opportunities to travel, both for work and for play (and often some combination of the two).

After obviously being grounded for the bulk of 2020, I made up for some lost ground in 2021. A weekend in the mountains of Maine, followed immediately by a week at the coast, a few days rest before flying to the Midwest or the Rockies.

Anyway, if I know that the time I’m spending away is all I’m getting this summer, I’m going to be prepared for it. While I am only a self-proclaimed expert, here are a handful of my best tips for getting the most out of your carry-on for this summer’s getaway.

There’s always a point around the time that winter comes to an end where you can feel confident saying that the worst of the winter weather is behind you. Sometimes, especially in New England, you can be proven wrong by a surprise snowstorm or cold stretch.

Winter Affects Dry Skin

Something that I am always ready to say goodbye to is the destitute state of my knuckles and hands after a few months of brutal cold. In past years, I’ve been plagued by cracks, chapped skin, and general discomfort from the effects of cold weather on the skin.

Again, this is preaching to the choir for anyone that lives in the Northeast or anywhere else that’s cold, though around here we take a certain pride in having to buckle down for cold snaps. Does It Work?

We love a good routine, but let’s face it we’re here for RESULTS! After three months of continued use, I am seeing some noticeable results from the Hydrating Body Spray. Most importantly was the defense that a moisturizing routine gave my skin during the cold winter months.

Settling Into a New Routine

Routine is the solution–waking up not too long after the second snooze, budgeting the time to stop for a coffee on the ride into the office on a day or two of the week when I’ve earned the extra treat. Of course, it bleeds into the day, and the emphasis on a solid routine is often the best barrier between my work life and my personal life, especially in the era of work-from-home. That being said, the morning is where it all starts.

After my first experience with MANSCAPED, I’ve found myself reaching for the dopp kit that holds their razor and all the goods that go with it – truthfully, more than I had anticipated. This has nothing to do with the product–I just thought it would be hard to break my routine, even if it’s for my own self-betterment. Adapting a routine is hard, but it is often the catalyst for growth. Building a Grooming Routine

It’s not as easy as flipping the switch, though. A good routine takes research. Not unlike most other angles in my life, I can be very picky when it comes to the quality of goods I use in my daily routine, which can make sourcing even the most generic daily-use products a difficult task. Some of the high-level boxes that a self-care product have to check for me are as follows:

• A strong foothold in ethics–for body care, that means a fairly strict stance on anti-cruelty, rid of additives like paraben and unnatural dyes, and when possible, sourced from natural or vegan ingredients.
• A pleasant smell–but definitely not an overpowering scent. Growing up in a household with a few sensitive noses, I try to be extra cautious with smells that may be abrasive to those a little more sensitive than me. That being said, a good, clean scent that elevates the experience of use and lingers pleasantly through the day is a big selling point for me.
• A low barrier to use. I am lucky to not have needed to employ any heavy-duty or medicated products in my day-to-day life, but often settling for the easiest application instructions has trained my mind to expect a fairly minimal sequence of events. An upgrade in product for me would also have to mean a minimal lift when it comes to changing up my routine.

At first glance, the Ultra Premium Collection checks all of those boxes. Upon digging in a little deeper, I feel comfortable and eager to use the products given the attention they pay to ingredients, testing, and ease of use. 2-in-1 Shampoo + Conditioner

These days, I’ve been a separate shampoo from conditioner kind of guy, but that’s just the luck of the draw lately. Whether or not it’s a good idea to admit it, I have historically gone for cheap over quality in that department. Hypocrite, I know. 2-in-1 is a familiar format but often leaves me feeling like it’s heavy on the shampoo side and non-existent on the conditioner side.

MANSCAPED’s blend is the opposite–they strike a really nice balance between the two, with what feels like a heavier emphasis on the second part. This is obvious right out of the bottle, with the product feeling denser and less opaque than other 2-in-1 products that I have used. That’s definitely my preference, especially in drier times of the year like the winter.

Body Wash

Hey, self-proclaimed bar soap guy here. Even on my face. Yes, I know I can do better. I am trying! This is a step in the right direction–for whatever reason, body wash is one of those things that feels extra fancy for me. Like the rest of the package, the smell comes through here but definitely works the hardest, in this case, to keep the whole body smelling good. All in all, I feel clean–which is a feeling that you know when you feel it, and you definitely know when you don’t feel it, too. I encourage you to try it out and be your own (clean) judge and jury.

Deodorant

I have long operated on the belief that one should be hypercritical of and deeply involved with their relationship to their deodorant. It’s better for you, it’s better for me–it’s a true win-win. So, coming from a tough critic–the Ultra Premium Deodorant is a good one. 

Most important in my book is the feel immediately after application–I’ve found that as long as the skin is dry before applying, it dries very quickly. That’s a big win – there’s nothing worse than putting a shirt on over wet armpits. As for durability, I used to often find myself reapplying mid-day for the fear that there could be stink arising (spoiler alert, I sit at a desk most of the day, so never much stink) but mostly for the sake of comfort, and I never felt compelled to reapply when using MANSCAPED’s. Win-win again.

Hydrating Body Spray

Like anything else in the world of grooming and body care, it’s more about the investment in yourself.

Recently, more and more men are choosing to manscape. That’s why it’s highly likely that you have heard about manscaping, as it’s the modern word for the practice that has been occurring for centuries. However, it’s expected that you don’t know everything there is to know about what it is and how to do it.

Even though it’s becoming a more widespread practice, you may have been asking yourself if it’s really necessary and what percentage of men manscape. Well, you have most certainly come to the right place as we will look at everything you need to know about grooming downstairs. 

What Is Manscaping?

It’s popularly believed that the term “manscaping” is derived from the two words “man” and “landscaping.” Essentially, manscaping is a term used to describe men who shave, wax, laser, or trim the hair on their bodies. Usually, men will manscape select body regions like their groin, chest, and back, but some choose to also do their shoulders, nose, eyebrows, and legs. 

The Actual Percentage Of Men Who Manscape

Men might not regularly talk about their manscaping practices amongst friends, but that doesn’t mean they are not doing it. In fact, many studies have proven that it is becoming more popular for men to manscape. Most men choose to groom their body hair for body image reasons and sexual activity reasons. 

According to an exploratory 2016 survey by the American Journal of Men’s Health, American men who are participating in manscaping the most are between the ages of 18 and 65. This national survey of noninstitutionalized adult men explored the grooming practices of 4,198 men. The survey uncovered that, on average, 50.5% of men reported that they regularly participated in manscaping activities. 

Interestingly, 73% of men between 18 and 34 groom their facial hair in preparation for sexual activity. Additionally, 61% of men groom for hygiene purposes, and 44% groom as part of their routine care schedule. 

Furthermore, it was also ascertained that out of the adult men who groom their pubic hair, 87% will manscape the region above the penis. In contrast, 65% will groom the scrotum region, and 57% will groom the penile shaft. 

Can Manscaping Negatively Affect Your Health?

With so many men deciding to participate in manscaping, a common question that’s asked is if it is safe for your health. Well, in general, manscaping is not an unhealthy grooming practice. Yet, there are a few health issues you should be aware of and keep in mind when you decide to next break out the razor. 

For example, choosing to manscape your groin area can lead to injury if you are not familiar with using a razor. According to ER reports, there are many who visit the emergency department for lacerations. These lacerations are usually caused by non-automatic razors and are often seen on the scrotum. 

Additionally, removing the hair from your pubic region does make you more susceptible to contracting STI’s. According to an insightful study done by the University of California, men who shave their pubic region have a higher likelihood of contracting HPV, syphilis, chlamydia, gonorrhea, genital herpes, and even HIV. 

The theory behind this is that when you manscape your pubic region with a razor, you are more prone to nicking your skin. Nicking your skin allows you to contract a disease when you have sex easier. Additionally, those who are manscaping frequently have been proven to be having more sex which is another reason they contract sexually transmitted diseases more often. 

In addition to injuries and sexually transmitted diseases, those who manscape the pubic region also have a higher likelihood of contracting a bacterial infection. Since many men are nicking themselves when shaving their groin, minor cuts are more prone to becoming infected when appropriate first aid isn’t used immediately. 

Ultimately, the groin is more prone to getting a bacterial infection because it is a place on your body that is usually moist, and bacteria loves to grow in a moist environment. Moreover, incorrectly manscaping can also lead to ingrown hairs and skin irritation that could lead to rashes developing. 

Five Tips On How To Mascape Correctly

Now that we discovered that manscaping is a widespread phenomenon and that you can get sexually transmitted diseases, bacterial infections, and injuries, it’s important to learn how to manscape correctly. If you manscape correctly, you have a lower chance of causing injuries and nicks that lead to STI’s. 

Yet, we understand that not everyone wants to get a professional to groom their body hair. So if you’re going to undertake manscaping on your own, the tips we mention might be of interest to you. 

1. Use The Correct Razor

If you are going to shave, you need to use the correct razor. That’s why cheaper razors are not always the best choice because they are manufactured with inferior materials that are flimsy. Using a flimsy razor can increase your chances of nicking or cutting yourself, which can lead to an uncomfortable trip to the emergency room. 

It’s better to avoid this situation by using a quality razor from one of the more prominent brand names like Gillette and Edwin. You will want to use a razor with two blades because a razor with fewer blades is less likely to irritate and cut the skin. 

Additionally, you should only use scissors that are specifically designed for grooming. You can get seriously injured if you use ordinary house scissors and your hands slip while you’re trimming your pubic region. 

2. Don’t Cross Contaminate

You don’t want to share your razor with anyone else. When you are manscaping with a razor that someone else utilized, you increase your chances of getting an infection. Additionally, you should never use the same razor that you use on your face to shave your groin, as this can transfer bacteria. If you think that you will get confused about which razor is which, you can always use disposable razors to be on the safe side. 

Besides avoiding shaving with a razor that someone else used, there is another way you can prevent cross-contamination. You need to be clean. This is usually the best way to avoid cross-contamination when shaving. If you shower before you manscape, you will not only avoid transferring the bacteria of your pubic region, but you will also soften the hairs and make them easier to wax or shave. 

3. Do A Warmup Before Shaving

You might not believe it, but before you shave your nether region, you should do a quick warmup, especially if you are not a very flexible person. Shaving can at times cause you to contort in ways you usually don’t, which can cause you to strain your muscles or cause yourself injury.

Yet, fret not as there is a simple solution to this dilemma. All you have to do is a few simple stretches, and you should have no issue. However, if you want an easier way than contorting your body to see where you have missed, you can use a full-length mirror. 

Additionally, if a razor seems too dangerous, you can opt to use a manscaping trimmer that is specifically designed for delicate areas, as these clippers tend to be much safer. Using a clipper will also decrease your chances of cutting yourself and irritating your skin. 

4. Make Sure To Use A Pre-Shave Oil

It’s essential to invest in pre-shave oil if you plan to manscape regardless of where you will be shaving. Pre-shave oil will protect your skin by ensuring it softens it before you start manscaping. 

Additionally, a pre-shave oil will also prevent skin irritation by ensuring there is enough lubrication where you need to shave. However, before using your pre-shave oil everywhere you want to shave, make sure it can be used on delicate regions like the pubic area. You should also learn what ingredients it has, as you don’t want one that has ingredients that will clog your pores.

5. Be Ready To Administer First Aid

You will inevitably nick yourself at some point in time while manscaping which is why you need to know your first aid and the items you need to have on hand. Since you can nick yourself and you don’t want to contract an STI or bacterial infection, you need to have a petroleum ointment and band-aids ready and waiting.
