The pea coat is stylish outerwear that traces its roots as far back as the 1700s. At first, it was a jacket made for sailors, but soon every man in the world demanded one. It can elevate a casual look to smart, casual, and fancy. Unlike many other jackets, the pea coat remains faithful to the original design.

The pea coat has a waist-length cut just above the thighs with the classic double-breasted front and oversized collars. Any man that doesn’t own a pea coat is undoubtedly missing out. It’ll be the first jacket you try on with every outfit. 

17. Shearling Coat

A Shearling coat is a must-have for every man during the winter season. It’s the perfect jacket for those cold days because it’ll keep you warm and stylish all at the same time. Not even snow can put a crimp in your style with a shearling coat. It often has lambskin, sheepskin, or faux fur on the interior and suede on the outer part.

It now comes in various styles and there’s really no way to go wrong with a shearling coat. It’s easily one of the most stylish jackets in every man’s closet. 

18. Track Jacket 

A track jacket is ideal for a morning run, an intense workout, or playing sports. However, a track jacket is suitable for more than just running. Nowadays, a track jacket is perfect for meeting up with friends or a low-key hangout. The sporty look is always in fashion, even if you have never played a sport.

It’s a laid-back, more leisurely style ideal for running the track or running errands. Men have become more creative with the track jacket as well. It can go nicely with matching track pants or a sweet pair of jeans. The track jacket will come in handy several times in life. 

19. Car Coat

The invention of the car coat came shortly after the automobile in the early 1900s. At that time, cars had an open concept, so they required warm clothing for drivers and passengers. The car coat was long and designed for maximum warmth. Eventually, it went from being a car coat to a stylish jacket to top off an outfit.

The car jacket remains popular today but has changed dramatically over the years. It’s a much shorter coat and less bulky. It’s gone out of style a few times but always finds its way back. 

20. Duffle Coat

The duffle coat can trace its origins to the 1450s in a small town in Belgium called Duffel. Since the 11th century, the city has manufactured a thick, coarse fabric called duffel. By the 1850s, they used that material to create the original duffle coat. It regained popularity during World War II with soldiers wearing the jackets.

It was typical for countries under Nazi rule to wear duffle coats to pay tribute to the Allied soldiers that freed them. However, it now uses a softer wool fabric, Melton Cloth. It comes in various styles but is usually short, fitted with large patches and a hood. 

Although the second weekend is about to kick off, one thing is for sure – it’s never too early to start putting your looks together for the next Coachella music festival. You need to have your outfits on point and Instagram-ready. You never know who you’ll run into at the infamous concert in the Southern California desert…

1. Boho Top and Shorts

This is a pretty easy look to pull off because it works on everybody. Temperatures can be pretty sweltering in the desert sun, so shorts are a good go-to for the daytime. Keeping them light in color not only detracts from heat but also makes it easier to match with brightly colored boho shirts. Having a button up short sleeve shirt allows you to keep it closed for sun protection or open a few buttons to feel the desert heat on your skin.

Keeping your Coachella outfit light and tonal in color is another great way to beat the heat. Camouflage yourself with your desert surroundings with white, cream, and khaki. Linen is a great fabric for staying and looking cool. At the very least, a linen scarf wrapped loosely around your neck will help with sun protection.

2. Flowy Top and Distressed Jeans

Personally, I don’t wear shorts, no matter the temperature. And distressed jeans are perfect for that rock-n-roll casual vibe without looking like you’re trying too hard. Throw on a flowy button up shirt and aviator sunglasses and let the good times roll! Black or denim jeans won’t show as much dirt since you will be exposed to the elements of nature, but white is always a good option for a lighter, more casual vibe.

Unbutton your shirt if you’re trying to show off your summer body. Just don’t forget about sunscreen! If you’re still in winter fluff mode, just keep a few at the top unbuttoned and enjoy the safety and protection from the sun and prying eyes.

Sneakers or boots are my recommendations for every outfit when it comes to festivals and concerts in general. There are plenty of people, a lot of dirt, too much sun, and frankly, flip-flops or sandals can really take a perfectly planned outfit down a few notches, especially when you’re in distressed jeans mode. Kick up the badass factor with a pair of Dr. Martens, Timberlands, or your favorite pair of broken-in Air Force 1s.

3. Flowy Top and Pants

Here’s a chance to show off a little more style. A pair of plaid pants with an easy-breezy long sleeve flowy button up, with the sleeves rolled up, is great for the evenings when the nighttime desert temperatures start to cool down.

Fitted flat-front khakis, gray chinos, or even navy pants, rolled at the cuff and worn with a short sleeve button up are always a great option. Wear the shirt fitted as well to show off the arms that you’ve been working hard for. Not there yet? No worries, you have a year to get in better shape if that’s what you’re after. If not, then when it comes to shirts, the more flowy the better. You can always wear your shirt unbuttoned over a t-shirt. Just don’t wear the t-shirt of the band you’re getting ready to go see. That’s a rookie mistake, my friend.

5. Hawaiian Shirt and Pants

Take your favorite Hawaiian shirt. Pair it with your favorite pants. Done. Ok, ok, here’s a little more styling help: pair white jeans or pants (dealer’s choice) with a white v-neck t-shirt. Then wear your Hawaiian shirt unbuttoned over it to pull the look together. This will keep you from looking like you’re attending a Labor Day party and trying to wear all your white clothing at once before fall.

Another simple way to wear this shirt is with jeans. Distressed or not, a bright red, blue, yellow, or orange Hawaiian shirt pairs perfectly with basic denim. Again, a pair or closed-toe shoes or boots is the way to go in an outdoor festival environment.

6. Hawaiian Shirts and Shorts

Remember wearing your Hawaiian shirt open over a white v-neck t-shirt and white pants? Replace the pants with the same white shorts you wore earlier with your boho shirt, and voilà, you have used clothes you brought for multiple purposes. This is under the assumption your white clothes didn’t get filthy and sweaty the first time you wore them. And honestly, even if they did, the rules are different at a festival. Normal social constructs do not apply in this world – at least with hygiene and fashion.

7. Open Shirt and Pants

You’ve already worn versions of this outfit multiple times. Your biggest decision is whether you wear a shirt underneath the open button up or not. That is up to you. An in-shape body is a dime a dozen when Los Angeles is so close, but the truth of the matter is, confidence is everything. Rock your dad bod. No judgment. At least not from me. Let’s call a sleeveless top what it really is – a tank top, which, in the hot desert sun, might be the perfect shirt to keep you cool. A black sleeveless top with black distressed skinny jeans, a pair of classic black Vans, and a red bandana around your neck is simple, yet stylish. Wear a long sleeve plaid button up or flannel around your waist to throw on when the cooler weather of night starts to roll in.

10. Sleeveless Tops and Shorts

The shorts you have repurposed multiple times need to be put away. Time for fresh, clean shorts. A longer pair of denim shorts, cuffed and rolled at the knee, matches literally any sleeveless shirt you want to pair them with. A high-top sneaker looks especially good with this style of shorts. 11. T-shirt and Shorts Outfit

Brighten up your day and have fun with a simple yellow t-shirt and matching yellow shorts. Bonus points if your shorts have miniature embroidered shapes on them. Throw a belt bag over your chest to break up the color. Or choose to keep it simple and just throw on any t-shirt and any shorts. They don’t even have to match. It’s Coachella. Either people don’t care about what you’re wearing at all or they care too much. And who cares what they think? You do you and have fun with it!

The best part about festival fashion is being able to mix-n-match. Using the same few pieces in different ways to create entirely new looks means less packing for you and just makes life easier. Pre-planning your looks also takes the guesswork out of getting dressed when you’ve been in the sun and the heat for multiple days.

Adding a hat and a scarf or bandana around your neck will help protect you from the sun, which, as I’ve mentioned repeatedly, is very, very hot. Even in April. If this is your first time at a Coachella festival, buckle up, buttercup! These are memories you will not soon forget unless you just don’t remember them to begin with!

Fashion has certainly changed dramatically over the past two decades, with some of the most unforgivable fashion faux pas occurring during this time. That’s not to say our parents didn’t have some missteps along the way (neon spandex anyone?), but generally speaking, things haven’t been great since we hit the 00s. 

To make sure you don’t commit any fashion mistakes, we have come up with the worst fashion trends in recent years that we hope never make a return. Please stop wearing backside embroidered jeans.

1. Harem Pants

These baggy pants are loose around the hips and legs before tightening at the ankle. First introduced by Parisian fashion designer Paul Poiret, these pants are influenced by Middle Eastern clothing and are still worn by many today. We would prefer to see less harem pants on the market. 

2. Furry Boots

Snooki from Jersey Shore loved furry boots and helped make them popular for one hot minute. We don’t see the appeal of wearing an animal on your feet, but they are still a favorite among the rave crowd. 

3. Belly Chains

For those who weren’t allowed to pierce their belly buttons, a belly button chain was the next best option. These hideous pieces of jewelry are useless and don’t really add anything to an outfit. Even Christina Aguilera, who was a fan of the belly chain, couldn’t help it become a top fashion trend. 

4. Saggy Pants

Synonymous with rappers, saggy pants first became a thing in the 90s before exploding in the 00s with the likes of pop stars Justin Bieber and Justin Timberlake helping make this fashion trend a success.

Worn below the waist to show off a man’s underwear, this trend was so widespread it resulted in some schools banning students from wearing their pants low. 

5. Backside Embroidered Pants

This is a no from us here at the Next Luxury offices. Popular in the early 00s, pants and shorts with embroidered designs and words on the ass were everywhere, with many celebs caught wearing this style of pants in public.

They featured designs like butterflies and flowers along with messages such as “I Love Boys” and “Juicy,” and were loved by the Jersey Shore crowd. A great way to express your personality, these pants are unsightly and one of the worst fashion trends in recent memory. 

6. Happy Pants

MC Hammer was a big fan of happy pants. This 90s fashion disaster is basically a wide-legged pant that comes in a kaleidoscope of colors.

Happy pants were actually fashionable for much longer than they should have been, first originating in the 80s, hitting their peak in the 90s, and still hanging on for dear life in the 00s.  

7. Shutter Shades

Rising to popularity in the 80s, shutter shades had a renaissance in the 00s when Kanye West wore a pair in the music video for “Stronger.” The sunglasses are not practical in the slightest, with the cheap plastic shades not only hampering your vision but also failing to protect you from the sun. 

8. Popcorn Shirts

If you grew up in the 90s you might have owned a popcorn shirt. Made from very thin materials resembling popcorn kernels, these tops are up there with the puffy shirt from Seinfeld when it comes to horrible-looking clothing.

They looked super tiny until you put them on, that’s when they would expand to fit your body. This led them to be marked as “one-size-fits-all,” although that wasn’t exactly the reality. 

9. Boot Cut Jeans

Boot cut jeans are the modern version of flares. While they don’t flare out as much as their 60s counterparts, these jeans are reminiscent of the era of free love. While some still think they are fashionable, we disagree, but they are better than wearing an actual pair of flares that’s for sure. 

10. Ed Hardy

Tattoo artist Don Ed Hardy was ahead of the game. The talented artist, heavily influenced by Sailor Jerry Collins, became one of the top earners during the 80s and 90s and turned his art into fashion in 2002 when he licensed his designs. It didn’t take long for Ed Hardy clothing to catch fire and soon everybody in the fashion world took notice, with many celebrities snapped wearing Ed Hardy. 

While the brand was a big seller for many years (and to be honest, still does well), it didn’t take long for people to start trashing it. The large, colorful, over-the-top designs are offensive to the eyes and Ed Hardy soon became associated with muscled gym junkies. 

11. Lace Up Jeans

As the name suggests, these 00s jeans had to be laced up from the front. Instead of a button or clasp to keep the jeans in place, this style of denim used laces that the wearer would need to tie up to keep the jeans in place. Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton were fans, but due to the fidgety nature of the laces and the gimmicky look of the jeans, they quickly became obsolete. 

12. Bathing Suit Dress

This item of clothing does exactly what it says on the label. It’s a bathing suit that also works as a dress. We can see the ease of having this two-in-one outfit, as you can take a dip, dry off, then head to the pub, but it’s just as easy to have another set of clothes ready to go. This trend is one that still exists today, although you don’t see too many people wearing bathing suit dresses when out and about, for obvious reasons. 

13. Corsets

Originating in Italy, corsets became all the rage in Paris during the 1500s. The tight undergarment was worn beneath a woman’s clothing and used to flatten the stomach and enhance the breasts. For some reason, in the 00s, it became fashionable to wear a corset over your clothes. Why? We don’t know, but it wasn’t a good look and thankfully is hardly seen these days. 

14. Von Dutch

Von Dutch is another gaudy fashion brand that was everywhere in the 00s. Paris Hilton, Madonna, Justin Timberlake, and Britney Spears were just some of the celebrities who were snapped wearing this horrible designer brand. Its fast rise to the top of the fashion tree was quickly cut down due to oversaturation and high-end fashion looking down on Von Dutch. 

The brand has had a resurgence in recent years thanks to the hip-hop community and several influencers making big money deals with Von Dutch, but hopefully this will be short-lived and Von Dutch will be relegated to the sale racks sooner rather than later. 

15. Denim Shorts With Exposed Pockets

This one just doesn’t make sense. Why would you want people to see the inside of your pockets? Apparently, it was meant to make jean shorts look sexier, but as anyone who has seen someone wearing denim shorts with the pockets exposed knows, it’s not a good look. 

16. Crocs

This one is sure to upset some people, but Crocs are horrible. There, we said it. Despite becoming fashionable in the past decade and one of the biggest selling forms of footwear in the world, we still can’t support the wearing of Crocs. These clunky alternatives to slides and flip-flops are extremely ugly and are one fashion accessory we wish never existed. 

17. Leather Trench Coats

Made famous by the Backstreet Boys and Keanu Reeves in the Matrix, leather trench coats are a no-no these days. Hot and heavy, they make you look like a goth and don’t have any place in modern fashion. Let’s not forget the Columbine killers also wore black leather trench coats, which should be all the urging you need to never wear one of these again. 

18. Leg Warmers

Popular in the 80s, leg warmers are worn over leggings to keep a person’s lower legs warm. Made from a variety of different materials and often coming in bright colors and featuring interesting designs, they are also hideous and have thankfully gone the way of the dodo. 

19. Poodle Skirts

Fashion started to become big in the 50s, although we don’t think the poodle skirt was one of the reasons why. Popular with young girls, these skirts featured designs of poodles on them. The poodles were usually embroidered onto the skirt and are now only found in vintage stores. 

20. Shoulder Pads

They look ugly, but shoulder pads served a purpose during the 80s and 90s. Women were finally being allowed to make an impact in male-dominated offices and the power suit became a thing. Many of these women’s suits came with shoulder pads that were meant to give an impression of authority and strength.

They might have done the trick 40 years ago, but today shoulder pads look clumsy and obtrusive and are a big no no when it comes to modern fashion. 

21. Giant Sunglasses

Just no. Sported by every famous person at some stage in the mid-00s, this form of eyewear has not aged well. Due to the size of the sunglasses, they often didn’t fit a person’s face and looked strange, often making beautiful people look less than desirable.

You still see these on occasion, but thankfully they pretty much died out in the 60s around the same time Woodstock ended and the summer of free love became a distant memory. Patterned tights might have a place in the gym, but not when the designs are likely to cause seizures for people who stare at them too long. 

Whether you are spending lunch with estranged family members or your in-laws, having a few drinks with work colleagues, or catching up with your childhood friends to reminisce on another year, your outfit says a lot about you. While comfort is always key, Christmas is also a good time to dress up and rock something a little classier than usual. It’s also the one time of the year you can wear a loud shirt or Christmas-themed jumper, showing your personality. 

Before you rush out and buy that shirt you’ve been eyeing for weeks, make sure you are aware of the dress code for Christmas. While most gatherings will be low-key and relaxed, allowing you to dress down, you might get an invite to a semi-formal Christmas lunch that requires a little more thought. This is especially true if you are eating at a restaurant or pub for Christmas, which is becoming more and more common these days as people want to leave the cooking to the experts. 

We want to make sure you are covered for all occasions, so below are all the different types of scenarios you might encounter, from a work Christmas party to an actual Christmas dinner, and what outfits work best for each occasion. 

The Office Christmas Party

Before we get to Christmas day, you are most likely going to attend one or two office Christmas parties beforehand. There’s a good chance you might go from work to the party, and if that’s the case, bring a nice shirt with you to the office to change into. Your trousers and shoes will be fine, but it’s nice to wear something different up top so it looks like you’ve made the effort. 

If you wear a suit and tie most days, ditch the tie and suit jacket and replace it with a nice shirt and a Harrington jacket. This is classy without being too casual. If you have time to change your pants, a clean pair of slacks or pleated trousers are a great option. Finish off with a pair of loafers or black dress shoes and you’ll look smart without sacrificing your style. 

The Black Tie Christmas Party

Now it’s highly unlikely you’ll be invited to a formal Christmas party, but on the off-chance, you work for a big organization that goes all out for Christmas, you want to be prepared. Most people own a black suit and tie, so this isn’t a hard outfit to prepare for, but if it’s your partner’s work function and you don’t wear suits in your everyday life, don’t fret.

Hiring is out of the question (a waste of money), so your next best bet is to mix and match the pieces in your wardrobe. A nice pair of dark pants (blue or black) paired with a white shirt and dinner jacket do the trick. You’ve probably got a black tie lying around somewhere too. Then you just need some nice dress shoes, such as a pair of Oxfords, and you’re good to go. 

If you want you can splash the cash on a nice dinner jacket or even go the whole hog and get yourself a suit, but it really isn’t necessary. You more than likely have the right ingredients in your wardrobe, it’s just a matter of bringing them all together successfully. 

The Themed Christmas Party

People love a theme and Christmas is one of the biggest. It’s also one of the easiest to dress for. Most Christmas-themed parties require you to wear festive-colored clothing, which is usually anything red, green, gold, or silver. It’s also the one time of the year you can wear that funny Christmas knit you’ve been wanting to show off all year. These days Christmas knits aren’t just colorful creations or ugly Christmas sweaters with reindeer that say “Merry Christmas,” just about every movie or TV show has a Christmas-themed jumper, while everything from alcohol brands to rude jokes can be found emblazoned on these once-a-year clothing options. 

As far as the rest of your festive outfit goes, you can go semi-formal with a pair of trousers and brown shoes, or more casual with jeans and sneakers. It all depends on the party and the theme and how casual things are. 

The Christmas Eve Catch-Up With Mates

The night before Christmas often involves more heavy drinking than the actual day itself. It’s a great time to see your friends and let off some steam before the big day, although it’s best if you limit yourself to just a few pints. There’s nothing worse than being woken up by the kids early on Christmas morning with a raging hangover. 

As this is usually a fairly casual meet-up, most likely down your local, the classic t-shirt and jeans combo works best. Pair your favorite denim with a white tee and you are good to go. Just remember that skinny jeans are out and the relaxed fit is back. You don’t want to be making any fashion mistakes around your mates who are sure to let you know about it. While a white t-shirt works best, as it goes with anything, feel free to chuck on any other type of t-shirt you might feel like rocking. Band tees and those with large graphics are also back in vogue. 

It’s most likely cold so another layer is a must, even if you just bring it with you. A sweater or hoodie works, but we recommend a jacket. This can be anything from a bomber jacket to a Harrington jacket and everything in between. Just as long as it keeps you warm. Casual shoes like Vans or white sneakers are a solid choice, but you can spruce things up with a pair of boots if you feel that way too. 

The Christmas Morning Unwrapping Presents

Now depending on how old you are and your family situation will have a big impact on what you wear first thing in the morning. If you’re an adult living out of home with friends, a partner, or solo, you are probably going to be sleeping off the hangover from the night before. This means rolling out of bed mid-morning, taking a shower, throwing on your outfit for the day, and heading out the door for the first round of Christmas catch-ups with relatives. 

If you have kids you know a sleep-in won’t be happening. You’ll most likely be woken at some ungodly hour and have to head down to the tree and unwrap the presents. If this is the case, walking out in your jocks isn’t what anybody needs to see, especially if the in-laws are staying over. A nice pair of pajamas will do the trick while you watch the kid’s eyes light up as they burn through opening their gifts. There are so many different types of PJs on the market, but a nice striped pair with neutral colors is always a good look. And if you really love Christmas, there are plenty of Xmas-themed PJs on the market you can wear for that one day of the year. 

The Lunch With Relatives

Christmas lunch is all about stuffing your face as much as possible and avoiding awkward relationship talk with your relatives who all wonder why you are still single. It gives you plenty of options when it comes to Christmas clothes, but the two main things that come to mind are comfort and style. You are going to be eating yourself silly, so you want clothes that aren’t too tight and will allow for some room around the waist. But you don’t want to look like a complete slob either in track pants and a sweater. 

The middle ground is a flexible pair of trousers, but if you really want to push the boat out when it comes to relaxation, there are now joggers and sweatpants that resemble jeans and trousers.
