The bars are abuzz, and the liquor (and more) keeps flowing. Beyond the party lifestyle, the thing about Bolivia that everybody loves is the Uyuni Salt Flats Tour. In the past, we’ve written that it’s worth breaking the budget for a visit. We stand by that still.

Even though it might cost $150 USD to get to the Flats, backpackers have said it is worth every penny to enjoy the unspeakable elegance of the pristine landscape. Bolivia is popular with mountaineers as well. Mountain climbing isn’t hard to find, and a climb up Huayna Potosi stretches over 20,000 feet (6,000 meters) and takes four days. It only costs $120 USD for the expedition.

Lodging is affordable in the form of both hotels and hostels. In Bolivia, street food and drinking aren’t pricey either. Just don’t get too drunk on those low-price beers. Although we can’t endorse it, there are even anecdotes about backpackers making a stop by the San Pedro Prison. Prison tourist or not, backpackers seem to enjoy what they see in Bolivia.

2. Guatemala

Guatemala is a beautiful country and possibly one of the most affordable for backpackers looking to save a few cents while out on the open road, especially in Central America. The combination of easy-to-use and very affordable public busses and shuttles make getting around easy. Guatemala is quickly becoming a hotspot for backpackers as more and more fall in love with its charms. 

Some Spanish is useful, but there are classes. For example, some backpackers opt to enroll in intensive Spanish courses. If you book a homestay for an additional fee (as low as $55 USD), you can stay with a local family for up to seven days (including meals).

Some say that backpacking in Guatemala on a solo trip is doable as well. With hostels starting at $5 USD a night, a couple of extra bucks might get travelers a decent upgrade and some privacy.

The place to check out is Tikal, an ancient Mayan city. You might also enjoy affordable cinema prices or grab some food from a street vendor. Others will prefer to visit the area where the Volcan de Fuego remains. The active volcano is constantly erupting!

3. Sri Lanka

For instance, from Colombo to Elsa is a 10-hour train ride (even though it’s a distance of only 124 miles). The first class ticket? That runs about $25 USD. The “tourist class” option runs a lot less, but trust us – if you’re on the train that long, it’s money well spent.

Homestays are the way to go in Sri Lanka, especially at only 10 dollars a pop. There’s no better place to live like a local. Although language differences can cause a little confusion, many people in Sri Lanka speak English. There’s simply no better place to tour in a Tuk Tuk!

4. Turkey

Turkey blends Islamic and European influences, and those who frequent the land rave about Istanbul, the coast, and everything there is to see in between. In Turkey, the monasteries, the Black Sea, and the UNESCO World Heritage sites provide plenty to see and do. Let’s not get started on the endless list of beautiful mosques, Ottoman Empire cities, and hikes to enjoy.

Even better, dining, drinking, and staying aren’t too pricey in Turkey. Even the local tours are easy on the old pocketbook. One backpacker rented a vehicle for two weeks and paid just under $400. This means a road trip might be in order. The professionals recommend giving Turkey two weeks for those who are going all-in on the excursion.

5. Vietnam

Vietnam is another Asian country that backpackers adore. They’re game for the affordable transit options as well as the happy hour specials that don’t seem limited from four to six.

Hostels in Vietnam don’t cost much, and some are rumored to hand out free beer for a few hours each night. Beer Hoi, a popular drink sold by street vendors, flows for just a quarter a pint in some locales. With such great deals, it’s not a surprise Vietnam sometimes feels like “Spring Break” for the backpacking crowd, not that many are complaining about it.

In Hanoi, the place to be is the Old Quarter. The Hanoi Party Backpacker Hostel is a suitable option for those who like to stick to the main drags. While in town, visitors should stock up on rice wine. It’s a local drink that packs a punch.

One hot tip is to try camping, perhaps on Kalanggaman Island. Past visitors say that although it’s a budget-friendly stop, checking it out would be worth it if the price were high. There are plenty of other islands off the beaten path to explore as well.

Travelers have laughed at how rum often costs less than a can of coke, so sometimes a double rum with coke is cheaper than a normal rum and coke. In other words, if you’re trying to cut back on dough, you’re bound to have a good time.

Although backpacking options exist in places like Laos, Cambodia, and Thailand, which tend to be more popular, the Philippines offers a rich culture, unique cuisine, and friendly atmosphere that should not be skipped.

7. Mexico

Mexico is such a large country that one could likely spend months backpacking its coasts, central regions, Fronteras, and still have more to see. Just one trip off the main road could lead to beaches, Mayan cities, colonial towns, and some of the largest metropolises on the planet.

The trek is worth it in the end. The scenic route provides plenty of opportunities for bird watching, stargazing, and just plain old “soaking it all in.” The mountain landscape appeals to nature lovers and social media fanatics alike. The view is just breathtaking.

In this locale, the flora and fauna take center stage on cycling, hiking, and climbing adventures. Past visitors advise guests to throw their phones away and enjoy the moment by living in it!

The small cabin sits atop one of the biggest mountains in Lac-Beauport. In fact, Mon Tourbillon gives a panoramic perspective of the entire Quebec region. Although the place is far from Montreal, picturesque Quebec City is only half an hour away.

There is a small town about 10 minutes away as well. Additional amenities include solar power, a propane heater, and a wood stove.

The listing emphasizes that if you are heading to this remote retreat in the winter, you’re going to have great snow tires to make it up the two-kilometer private road.

What guests tend to remember most about their stay, beyond the nature, fun, and activities, is the orange sunsets that capture the spirit of the season night after night.

3. The Ultimate in USA Log Cabin Life is in Asheville, North Carolina

In the USA, there’s one cabin-centric city that stands taller than the rest: Asheville, North Carolina. Our favorite place to stay in this scenic town is Asheville River Cabins. Here, the slogan is “Creating new friends, one guest at a time.”

Asheville’s claim to fame is that it is located on the beautiful French Broad River. With more than 1,000 feet of river frontage, finding a cabin with a view of the river is a cakewalk. Just pull up a chair, sit back, and watch time float on by.

Although many people fantasize about a tiny house log cabin vacation, Asheville River Cabins doesn’t go small. The cabins are a healthy size no matter what’s on the menu: efficiency, a one-bedroom, or two-bedroom model.

Located on over nine acres of wooded land, the properties offer activities like tubing, kayaking, and canoeing. Many cabins allow for launching right outside the door. 

All cabins have at least a kitchenette, refrigerator, and two-burner convection stovetop. The cabins have queen-sized beds. Some offerings have private hot tubs with river views and a fireplace. Large LED 4k smart TVs, sleeper sofas, and ceiling fans are also available.

Our favorites are the Bear Cabin and the 200-Year-Old Cabin.

4. Get Back to the Basics in British Columbia

Porteau Cove Provincial Park, in British Columbia, has many types of establishments, but our favorite is the Porteau Cove Olympic Legacy Cabins.

The cabins were built for the Winter Olympics in 2010. All the log homes are masterpieces, featuring hand-carved animals on the logs outside. Inside, a one-bedroom loft configuration suits the bill for solo and couples trips. There’s also a bathroom, private deck, and kitchen.

Again, scenic mountain views are the main draw for the cabins. Additionally, the nearby park and Britannia Mine Museum are only 10 minutes away by car and often seal the deal for travelers.

Other amenities include private bathrooms with toiletries and flat-screen televisions. There’s also a rocky beach nearby, and parking is free. In the area, one can find the Furry Creek Golf and Country Club as well as the Stawamus Chief Provincial Park.

Pack a bottle of wine and uncork that baby at night while recovering from the hiking and biking experience on the trails.

The oceanfront decks give views of Howe Sound as well as the snow-covered mountains. It’s a great place to stay in any season.

5. Try Some Sexy Glamping Near Sayulita in San Pancho, Mexico

Glamping is a portmanteau of the words glamour and camping, and these two pastimes come together in San Pancho (San Francisco), Mexico, an hour north of Puerto Vallarta on the Pacific Coast in the famed Riviera Nayarit.

Near Sayulita, but in the calmer and nature-inspired San Pancho, the Sustainable Nature Retreat in the jungle is a perfect fit for somebody wanting something tropical and open air. 

The place can accommodate seven or fewer guests in three palapa-style cabins. Queen or twin bamboo beds offer a comfy place to hit the hay, and the dry composting toilet in the bathroom reminds guests of how important it is to take care of our environment.

The area offers many outdoor activities like hiking, swimming, surfing, and bronzing on the beach, but culinary, art, and cultural options aren’t far off in the pueblos (including Sayulita and Bucerias). 

If one prefers to cook at the cabin, that’s no problem. There is a small but stocked kitchen with a stove, oven, dishes, forks, knives, and spoons. There’s also clean drinking water and an icebox.

An outdoor jungle shower (with hot water) provides the perfect place to let the mind wander. Hammocks in the garden provide a lovely place for a nap, and a swimming pool means one can take a quick dip to escape the Mexican heat, which is humid from May through November.

This property is technically off the grid, using solar power, well water, and composting toilets. Privacy is key, but most people can still catch a strong enough cellphone signal to send a few texts or post their latest selfies.

6. Reach New Heights in a Treehouse Cabin in Taberg, NY

Many people haven’t heard of Goodall’s Treehouse Cabin in Taberg, NY. These people are missing out on a cabin that finds itself in a 60-acre sanctuary overrun with fragrant pines. 

Jane Goodall, the conservationist, is the namesake for the lodging, located in upstate New York. The two-story cabin has a reading nook (great for meditation, journaling, and reflecting) as well as a balcony to take in the sights and sounds of the ecosystem. 

A space atop of a ladder hides the sleeping loft, cozy and calm for a good night’s rest. The cabin is often described as “semi-rustic” because although it has electricity and heat, there’s a sawdust toilet. There is access to a shared shower. 

Snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and downhill skiing make the place a fun stop for a winter trip, too.

Beyond the half-mile of river frontage and hiking trails, amenities like a volleyball court, fire pits, ponds, friendly rescue mutts, and free-range chickens keep the place lively and active. 

7. Go Big or Go Home With the Tahoe Crest View Lodge

The Tahoe Crestview Lodge isn’t what most people would picture when somebody says “log cabin vacation.” This would be because it’s massive, coming in at about 5,000 square feet. It’s modern. It’s contemporary. It’s too much, and that’s why it made the list.

The space fits up to a dozen visitors, and the list of amenities seems to go on and on. There’s a private sauna, spa-quality showers, and enough balconies to make everybody feel like royalty. When you throw in those famous South Lake Tahoe views, there’s nothing else to ask for.

The large property is near Washoe Meadows State Park and close to the South Tahoe Ice Arena. 11 miles away one can take advantage of Emerald Bay State Park.

Finding a cabin with beautiful mountain views is pretty easy, but finding one with a game room, home theatre, sauna, steam room, ping pong table, large fenced yard (with teepee), a gourmet kitchen, and a business center? Now that’s worth writing home about.

8. Visit the Pocono Mountains and Stay at the Countryside Cottages

Driving across the USA can be really beautiful or really uneventful depending on the state and route taken. Reaching the Pocono Mountains, however, is different. The views are bountiful in all seasons, and there’s always something to do in the area, especially at these cottages.

Countryside Cottages has several cabins for rent, ranging from two-bedroom to six-bedroom spaces. The cottages are rusticly deluxe, apt for a romantic rendezvous, a family road trip, or just a fun weekend with the fellas. Even solo travelers can find some breathing room here.

With amenities that include swimming pools, tennis courts, a playground, and a game room, there’s something for everybody on these grounds.

The family history adds to the appeal. The property was started by the Strand Family in 1960. Today, the cabins still offer the same bliss, serenity, and tranquility they did decades ago.

9. Journey to Alaska for the Trip of a Lifetime

If you are interested in an Alaskan cabin rental, the place to book is Johnstone.

The journey to the property starts with a flight that crosses mountains, oceans, lakes, waterfalls, and glaciers. If you can spot them, a whale, mountain goat, or bear may capture your attention as well. It’s a sight to behold.

Alaska is the place to head if for the folks who want something off the beaten path. In this state, one might find more space and privacy than they would in the lower 48.

Most cabins in Alaska are for the more serious campers as the lodgings can be categorized as rural, remote, and rustic.

North of the Gulf of Alaska, 30 miles from Seward, the Johnstone Adventure Lodge is the place to be. The experience requires guests to fly in, and the flight is said to be a surreal experience due to the property’s forest-surrounded location.

10. There’s Always Captain Steve’s Fish Camp in the Everglades

There’s something so tantalizing about an Airbnb listing entitled “CAPT STEVES FISH CAMP, 1 BLOCK TO MARINA/DOGS OKAY.” Who is Captain Steve? What’s a Fish Camp? What we can tell you is it’s close to the marina and dogs are okay. The rest of the details are fuzzy, but we’re interested.

This lodging is in Chokoloskee, an unincorporated community near a place called Ten Thousand Islands in Collier County in Florida. The small area only has a population of 359, so if a small town is on your non-negotiables list, you’re in luck.

Today, the economy of the area relies heavily on recreational boating and fishing, especially as people flock to the nearby Gulf of Mexico to check out the Everglades National Park with ecotourism in the back of their minds.

Here, you’ll have the cabin to yourself. The check-in involves a lockbox, so you really don’t have to socialize if you’re hoping for a recluse-style vacation.

The rental maintains two bedrooms and a full bath. There’s a pull-out sofa in the living room as well as a full kitchen, BBQ, and porch. A washer and dryer in the back mean you don’t have to worry about getting covered in mud while exploring!

1. Have a Blast at Universals’ Volcano Bay in Orlando, Florida

Only a few years old, the Universal Volcano Bay park was constructed in the image of Krakatau, a mythical god, and the Waturi tribes. This park is where resort life meets water park spirit thanks to a waterproof wristband.

The TapuTapu bracelet enables guests to report wait times, pay for meals, operate lockers, and reserve rides. They’re handy. They also activate sprayers and special effects. 20 rides await, so if your definition of an awesome time is a volcano that doubles as a thrilling waterslide, you’re in luck. 

Lounge chairs mark a spot for rest and relaxation. Double down on it with a trip through the winding river (or wave pool). The park has cabanas, so privacy is absolutely on the menu. Concierge services sweeten the deal as well. You could be kicked back, in the shade, flip flops off, snapping your fingers for a bottle of water before you know it. 

2. The Blizzard Beach in Orlando, Florida by Disney Makes a Splash

Mount Gushmore marks the spot of this Walt Disney World Resort water park. A family-friend facility, this park stands out with its 120 foot Summit Plummet water slide. The 350 feet long ride pushes users as fast as 55 mph! 

What brings the people out to Disney’s Blizzard Beach Water Park is the nostalgia factor. It’s an old-fashioned looking place, complete with free-fall waterslides and plenty to do for those who will travel with tykes in tow.

The service here is simple in nature. Be expected to carry around your own tube the way it was done back in the day. On the plus side, the lines here are actually shorter a lot of the time, according to recent patron reports.

To make the experience even more memorable, consider reserving a cabana for some privacy. Each one offers a designated spot to stash your stuff, so you’ll enjoy the amenities even more. If it’s available, consider tracking down the “Sand Pail” ice cream treat! Just be sure to eat it fast. Ice cream can melt pretty fast during the Florida summer.

3. Legoland Water Park Is the Way to Go

The best water parks were designed with kids and kids-at-heart in mind, which is why Legoland Water Park in Carlsbad, California floats up toward the top of our recommendation list. Lego-themed attractions are the main draw as are the facility’s splash pads and slides. For the engineers and creatives out there, a fun lazy river lets swimmers float on deconstructable rafts made of soft Lego bricks.

In the spirit of Cartoon Network’s Lego Legends of Chima, one section uses the program as a motif. There’s also a spot where guests can craft race boats. There’s a major photo opportunity at this park: the Lion Temple Wave Pool’s arch. Over 260,000 Legos were used in its construction.

Other notable areas include the joker soaker where you’re sure to get drenched in chlorinated fun. There are water cannon blasters that release over 350 gallons of water from a towering clock. You’ll see the crowd congregate awaiting the next drop.

As this locale mostly serves families, the LEGOLAND Resort Hotel might be a good place to spend the night. It’s impressively been ranked as one of the best hotels for families according to TripAdvisor.

4. Getting Wet and Wild in the Wisconsin Dells

New Yorkers have the Hamptons; Chicagoans have the Wisconsin Dells where Noah’s Ark Waterpark is a popping spot to hang all summer long. The Wisconsin Dells are often called the Water Park Capital of the World, and this 70-acre locale is the crown jewel. 50 attractions, which include fume rides and a dive-in 4D theater, are going to dazzle and delight until the lifeguards clear the pool.

Even for tough guys, the rides can be intimidating. The side-by-side racer known as Raja drops riders into the mouth of a cobra. In the midwest, many fondly remember America’s largest water park which has been in operation since 1979. Now that people are looking at what’s nestled into America’s interior, the Wisconsin icon is gaining traction with fans across the country. Locals love it so much they buy season passes.

5. Pack Your Swimsuit and Head to Water World

Turning our sights to the next park on the list, Water World in Federal Heights, Colorado, it’s clear why this Denver-centric park has gained popularity with locals and travelers alike. The 70-acre park has over 50 amenities to enjoy. The Thunder Bway Wave Pool is always exciting, and a lazy river option soothes those avoiding too much adventure. 

This is what makes Water World a great compromise destination for parties that want to unwind in different ways. The visitors can book a cabana or bungalow during their time at Water World. Be sure to reserve a spot ahead of time as the spaces are limited. Spend time at Cowabunga Beach in a bungalow that offers lounge chairs and charging spaces.

The most thrilling rides are Longs Peak, Blanca Peak, and Pikes Peak. The park boasts free parking which is a good perk since many do not. If a child is shorter than 40”, they aren’t charged admission. Seniors can enter at a reduced rate. With policies like these, Water World maintains a solid rapport with its guests.

6. A Kiss of Summer Sun at The Boardwalk at HersheyPark

Milton Hershey made Hershey, Pennsylvania famous, but nowadays, plenty of people head into the area just to enjoy The Boardwalk at HersheyPark. In Hershey, everything is chocolate-themed. Why not let the cherry on top be a sweet water park tour? The Boardwalk is smaller than other parks on the list with 17 wet attractions on the menu. Remember, though, bigger isn’t always better.

As an added bonus, the park is open to anybody who purchases a Hersheypark ticket. The fans rave about the hydromefume, the Coal Cracker. They also gush about the park’s hydromagnetic rollercoaster. Another fun option includes the Whitecap Racer (the park claims it to be the longest in the world) which sends two people scrambling down the water slide to the finish line on a mat. 

Pro tip: If you lose the race, make it the best two out of three. If you win, no rematches.

Although the East Coast Waterworks station which pumps over 54,000 gallons of water through 600 toys may make the park look like it was built for kids, the more exciting rides make it a place anybody can unwind. Guest experience is king here. There are cabana rentals, thirteen food spots, three retail spaces, lockers, and charging stations. This park is seasonal, open from Memorial Day to Labor Day in early September.

7. Consider a Niagara Falls Detour to Darien Lake Splashtown

Niagara Falls is a family vacation classic, but why not steer forty-five miles southeast and go to the 10-acre waterpark called Darien Lake Splashtown instead? Located in Darien Center, New York, the Darien Lake park has kept locals and visitors rocking and rolling with summertime leisure for over five decades.

There’s plenty to check out at Splashtown. Seven slides set the precedent for a slippery and speedy day. Take on the 70 foot Brain Drain or test your luck with the 700 foot long Big Kahuna. 

One major perk here is that the lazy river is heated. Not all water parks do that, so you’ll be sure you won’t be covered in goosebumps when trying to enjoy the amenity. If you like it more adventurous, then the monstrous wave pool has your name written all over it.

Smiles are a common sight at Darien Lake Park. Whether it’s the private cabanas, the RipCurl racing slides, the 300 foot drop (in only 10 seconds) Brain Drain, the Crocodile Isle wave pool, a grin is certain to surface as a result. Don’t forget to check out the Tornado, a funnel ride that sets the park apart from the rest. You don’t have to worry about overdoing it on your visit; you can crash in a hotel, campsite, or cabin on the property.

8. Get a Taste of Splash Country with Dolly Parton’s Stamp of Approval

Dollywood’s Splash Country Water Park in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee offers a twist when it comes to water park activities. It celebrates the Great Smoky Mountains which are 10 miles south. The theme is exquisitely country with elements such as the Bear Mountain Fire Tower playground and a water tower and a waterfall that set the scene.

Greenery surrounds the property, so your Snapchats and selfies will sport a mountainous backdrop. Don’t forget to get one of yourself gliding through the Downbound Float Trip (lazy river). It’s not all cute and clever, though. There is something with some kick in the RiverRush, known as the only water coaster in all of Tennessee.

9. Try an Indoor/Outdoor Water Park Option in Lake Geneva

The Timber Ridge Lodge & Waterpark in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin is a facility operated by the Grand Geneva Resort and Spa. The grounds are gorgeous, neatly aligned with a woods, golf course, an arcade, and a 50,000 square-foot water park.

It’s an indoor/outdoor facility. In other words, visitors can enjoy 100% of the water park in the summer and most of it in the winter. Not all water parks offer the luxury of a winter dip!

The park sits in a resort town, Lake Geneva, which is popular with boaters, boutiquers, and brunchers. People regularly drive in from Milwaukee and Chicago to stay at the Timber Ridge Lodge, spending the weekend (or week) at the water park. 

10. Take it Down to Texas with a Visit to Schlitterbahn Waterpark and Resort

In New Braunfels, Texas, the place to be all summer long is Schlitterbahn Waterpark and Resort. A beautiful river provides shape to the 70-acre facility. Some Texans believe the park to be one of the world’s best for that fact.

At the park, patrons can challenge themselves with the Uphill Water Coaster, try surfing, fly down water slides, or take in some sun (with sunblock!) near a cabana. There’s even an AquaVeyer that moves you to the top of the ride so you don’t even have to get out of your tube. If you’re loving the lazy life, stay at the resort by reserving a room.

The standout attraction is the Boogie Bahn Surfing Ride. Water rushes up a tarp creating an artificial wave that can be surfed for hours on end. Over 50,000 gallons per minute of water push through the machine, giving surfers the optimal momentum to bodyboard on the attraction. It takes plenty of practice, say the pros. Once you find your balance, however, you can begin to master tricks like somersaults and barrel rolls.

Beneath the wave is foam, so no need to stress if you wipe out! The ride is a high-risk activity, so be prepared to read the rules and check your height (42” requirement) at the gate. This summer, hit up the water park, make a splash, and stay cool with these recommendations for your next big day out.

Not all theme parks, amusement parks, and carnivals are created equal, however. The local fairs that come and go can be a lot of fun, but they don’t offer the same high-velocity, death-defying rides or 100%-in themed fun that the big names maintain. In other words, there’s something for everyone whether making a road trip out of it, buying a season pass, or just keeping it close to home.

This top 10 tour of America’s best theme parks is suited for the adventurous and fun-loving, so check your height, load on, and fasten your seatbelts. Here are our favorite names in the parks and resorts racket.

1. Take on the Valravn at Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio

Ohio may not be the first place that comes to mind when somebody mentions theme park rides, but that’s part of the appeal of this Lake Erie-based amusement park. Cedar Point currently has 18 roller coasters on the roster. As an added bonus, the crowds are generally more local so waits aren’t always as gnarly as they might be at a park that boasts national fame.

As you prepare to enter the park, you’ll hear everybody chatting about the Valravn (Height requirement: 52″ minimum) at the gates. Are you going to go on it? It’s 223 feet high! You feel like you’re falling over the edge, and then woosh! Of course, some will chicken out!

Riders get a lot of thrills on the Valravn because it doesn’t only send them through a 270 degree roll but also down a second drop of 131 feet to complete the course. The only word left to describe this ride is exhilarating. If you’re in Ohio, you might as well make a day of it!

2. Crawl Inside Your Television with Universal Studio Tour in Orlando, Florida

80s and 90s kids remember getting hyped about Universal Studio in Orlando, Florida, just because our favorite television show characters would be there. Whether we made our way or not as kids, we can now take full advantage of what the park has to offer.

True, the park has seen its changes, but fan-favorite television shows and movies still make the rounds with the likes of The Simpsons and Harry Potter well-represented.

Some of the rides take us on a trip to yesteryear, like the Revenge of the Mummy and the Men in Black Alien Attack. The first is dubbed exciting (but not frightening) by most visitors. The Men in Black attraction includes alien-shooting play.

If you’d rather leave the aliens alone, check out the E.T. Adventure, the only remaining activity from the venue’s first day. It’s a good throwback, that’s for sure! Don’t forget to end the trip with a walk through the souvenir store. Half of the fun of going is picking up a memory so you can treasure the trip for years to come.

3. Take it to Tinsel Town for Universal Studios Hollywood in California

Hollywood, California is famous for its connection to the silver screen. The Universal Studios Hollywood attraction adds to the allure. Those who frequent the attractions often say it’s totally doable to get in and out in one day, which means a great value for a quick stop while in town.

The park is fairly small, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth visiting. On the contrary, going on every ride before the park closes will feel like an attainable goal.

It’s a classic road trip destination, so hotels are easy to find. You even take the Metro there via Universal City Station. If you’re driving, you don’t have to worry.

The best time to go is when it’s not the weekend or a school holiday. If you go during busy times, be prepared to wait in long lines. It’s when everybody does, so backups are common. You can find visitors grabbing a cold one at Moe’s Tavern after checking out the Shrek 4D experience.

Fun fact: The land is split between unincorporated Universal City and Los Angeles proper. This means lodging, eating, and entertainment options are plentiful.

4. An Epic Visit to Epcot Theme Park in Lake Buena Vista, Florida

Back in the day, it wasn’t uncommon for a bunch of kids to respond “I went to Epcot Theme Park in Lake Buena Vista, Florida” when asked what they did over their time off on the first day of school after a long break. Even today, this Walt Disney World Resort is still quite the hit in some crowds, especially those who want to see the world without having to get a passport.

It’s a resort with an international appeal as countries from around the world are represented in a series of curious attractions. One of the most recommended is one of a Mexican flavor, the Gran Fiesta Tour boat ride. We recommended La Cava del Tequila for a quick drink, especially for brunch!

Another can’t miss ride is Living with the Land. It’s a boat tour that takes riders through swamps, farms, and a stylistic greenhouse that really grows plans.

The produce is used elsewhere on the property! Some people worry it’s a little too educational for a theme park, but most naysayers have changed their tune after experiencing it.

5. Have You Been to Busch Gardens in Tampa, Florida?

Another fan favorite out of Florida, Busch Gardens remains a hidden gem in Tampa. For some, the Africa-themed park offers the best of both worlds: a ride on a rollercoaster and a world-class zoo. Their current claim to fame is the tallest freestanding drop tower in North America, standing at 335 feet.

The ride gives you a front row seat to the action by turning your body 90 degrees so you drop face first, staring at the ground as you fall. On the way up, the Busch Gardens’ Falcon’s Fury offers stunning views of Tampa’s downtown as well as of the park.

That’s the cherry on top of what might be the perfect amusement park ride. The rating of the machine is “extreme,” so it’s not for everybody (including people who are shorter than 54”).

6. A Classic: Disneyland Park in Anaheim, California

Riding Splash Mountain at Disneyland Park in Anaheim, California is an American rite of passage. It’s one of the most commonly referenced theme park rides in the country, and it’s absolutely earned its place as a household name. Not everybody “does” water rides, so make sure you don’t have any spoilsports in your crowd before heading out (unless they like sitting on the side with everybody’s bags).

We should note that the ride isn’t without its problems, historically speaking. There are some questionable motifs displayed as there is a misguided presentation of African folklore. Rumor has it a recent overhaul has done away with the images.

Most television and movie-based theme parks are heading in a new direction, toward on-screen experiences. Rides like Splash Mountain probably won’t be around forever.

7. Holiday at Santa’s Village in Jefferson, New Hampshire

Christmas-themed amusement parks have largely been replaced by similar events in the pop-up format. In Jefferson, New Hampshire, Santa’s Village continues to thrive regardless of the trend. The park is more on the family side, but it could be a fun way to celebrate Christmas in July!

The Christmas-flavored snacks and exciting rides and stops make the park a fun way to spend a couple of hours. The 23 rides are clever homages to Santa himself (i.e., The Great Humbug Adventure”). These rides are for children, so bring your kids or nieces/nephews!

Visitors of all ages can grab a personalized item at Fezziwig’s Personalization Shop, especially if you’ve been hoping to stock up on gifts for your loved ones (or yourself) before the holiday rush kicks in.

8. Dollywood Offers Something Off the Beaten Path in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee

Dolly Parton is an icon who keeps making a comeback every time a new generation of music fans falls in love with “Jolene” and “9 to 5.” With such buzz always popping up, it is no wonder that there would be a land dedicated to her songs and style.

In the heart of the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, Dolly Parton is the partial owner of an amusement park named in her honor. The hotspot offers rides, attractions, music, and comfort food. It’s dubbed fun for the whole family, so everybody’s bound to find something they’ll enjoy.

Recommended ride: Try the Dollywood Express, a 110 ton coal-powered engine that takes riders on a 20 minute (five miles) tour of the mountainside.

9. Kick it Old School at Fun Spot America in Atlanta, Georgia

There’s another type of theme park that shouldn’t be left off the list: smaller, local venues. These are the nearby places that make birthday parties, school trips, and first dates some of our fondest memories thanks to laser tag, mini-golf, bumper cars, bowling, and arcade games.

Some are bigger than others, advertising water parks, kart racing, and Ferris wheels. A classic example that comes to mind is one featured in Cobra Kai on Netflix – Golf N’ Stuff. It’s not the one from the original Karate Kid, but it’s close and was featured on the spinoff program, so it’s still worth the visit in our book, especially if you are into the retro movement.

This location finds itself in Georgia, so it could be a worthwhile spot if you’re in the area. The location offers rides, go-karts, and video games. A lot of people come for these but stay for the minigolf!

10. Ride the Raging Bull at Six Flags Great American in Gurnee, Illinois

Six Flags has locations across the United States and Mexico, so if Gurnee, IL, is too far for you, you can research options near you, making it a fun travel experience no matter where you land.

In Chicagoland, a fun summer day often starts with one question: Do you want to go to Six Flags and ride the Raging Bull? Everybody with a season pass is sure to be down, and a few other friends are likely to tag along. 

This 202 feet (twenty stories) beast tops the chart at 73 mph, holding the crown for the park’s biggest and fastest ride. The course drops through some dark areas and gives visitors a ride they won’t soon forget as they rush through six horizontal loops. Bring your swimsuits because the water park next door is worth a trip, especially if you want to hit up the FlowRider, a surf simulator.

Planning Your Trip

The most important part of trip planning, especially when heading to an amusement park or theme park, is getting a good value out of the prices as they’re usually high. The best way to avoid endless lines, high costs, and long drives are to keep it local.

On the other hand, some people have large budgets for amusement and theme park vacations. If that’s your case, don’t rule out the big names! They’ve got plenty to offer.

The UK consists of four countries, England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Located near France and other European nations, it’s famous for being a hop, skip, and jump away for many travelers. The recommendations rank our top three contenders followed by six very honorable mentions and a bonus suggestion outside the UK.

1. Make a Move in Manchester

It seems like people are always raving about what a great home Manchester is, and we can see why. It has earned the top spot on our list. It’s where the industrial revolution first took off, bringing the world modern-day society as we know it. Technology just wouldn’t be the same without it. As one of the first cities in Britain to have trains and busses, it’s a city that’s accessible as much as it is historical.

What lands Manchester the number one spot is the famous Manchester International Festival, locally known as MIF. This summer program brings together artists and musicians from all over the world. In the July 2021 edition, it’s running from July 1st through the 18th.

The program proudly boasts a roster with acts from over 20 different countries. Be sure to include a visit to “The Factory,” the festival’s new central space.

Luckily, if you can’t make it to Manchester just yet, some of the festivities will be live-streamed, giving wanderlusting travelers a chance to get a sneak peek of the action. Music buffs, in particular, will love a stop in Manchester because of its rich cultural history, with the likes of Joy Division, The Smiths, The Stone Roses, and Oasis hailing from this diverse city. 

2. Get Lucky in London

London scores the silver medal on our UK countdown. In the United States, if somebody says “across the pond,” most people immediately conjure up images of Harry Potter, Big Ben, London Bridge, and maybe her Majesty herself.

Since the 1800s, London has been a hustle and bustle hotspot for global tourism. Vintage postcards of St. Paul’s Cathedral or the Tower of London remind us of why this major city has always been such an icon.

Now instead of gaslit lamps reminding us of the stories told by Charles Dickens, we see a modern metropolis filled with the spirit and international pizzaz any good bloke can enjoy. It isn’t necessary to lay out all the must-sees for London as there are hundreds of guidebooks that do a very thorough job. Instead, we’ll just mention two ideas to pencil in on your agenda.

The first is visiting the London Zoo. It’s a classic excursion that suits solo travelers, friends, couples, and families. It’s great for a little people watching or to brush up on your understanding of natural history or biology.

Nearby, visit The Ivy St. John’s Wood. The dining hall is spectacularly designed with images of birds and plenty of mirrors that allow oodles of natural light to flood the space. There’s a special weekend brunch menu. 

Recommended dish: Lobster Linguine – a pasta with San Marzano tomatoes, chopped parsley, and a dash of spring onion.

3. Don’t Rule Out Cardiff in Wales

The bronze goes to a sort of up-and-comer, Cardiff, the capital of Wales. The city has been the most important in Wales for ages, but now people are starting to really appreciate it in new ways. It’s the eleventh biggest city in the UK, one of Wale’s 22 geographical areas. It’s also rumored to be the biggest commercial city in Wales. 

In Glamorgan, the city/county sits on the Bristol Channel on the River Taff. It’s only about 240 km from London (150 miles). The locale has gained traction since becoming the filming place of Doctor Who which regularly plays on the BBC.

Our top pick for the “things to do” category is the National Museum. Bring your camera so you can get a picture with the Basking Shark that hangs above the ceiling, one of the largest fish found near Wales.

4. Visit Inverness in the Spirit of Macbeth

Scotland is famous for many reasons, one of which happens to be the setting for William Shakespeare’s play, Macbeth. Inverness has a lengthy history stretching back as far as 565 AD when St. Columba was recorded as a preacher (way before Shakespeare entered the stage).

Today, Scotland is so tied to the play that tours for fans of the work are popular. On a Macbeth-themed tour, spots include Dingwall and Inverness. To make the most out of your excursion, consider booking the real Macbeth tour.

The tour provider states that guests can trace Macbeth’s footsteps. In fact, the difference between the historical Macbeth and that of Shakespeare may lead tourists to reexamine how they understand the figures.

5. You Can Count on Canterbury

Canterbury is famous for providing us with one of the pillars of world literature, The Canterbury Tales. With some careful planning, you should be able to leave the town with a few sordid anecdotes of your own.

The famous work tells of citizens making a spring pilgrimage, eager to share their stories. It provides a kaleidoscope of perspectives (some raunchy), something that still makes Canterbury exciting and loveable today. The geography offers something for everybody: urban life, coastal bodies, and countryside chic are all on the menu.

There’s Princeton and Yale, and then there’s Oxford. It’s a city in the southern/central region of England. Here, everything can be traced back to the University’s distinguished presence. Opened in the 12th century, it boasts 39 unique colleges and/or halls across the city’s medieval city center.

The college setup is unique in that it governs small fractions within a major one, giving resources to unique groups that carry varying perspectives. This means the community here is not only brilliant but also diverse in nature. Maybe you’ll like it so much you’ll decide to stick around for a term!

7. Sore Over Stonehenge/Salisbury in a Helicopter

The only reason Stonehenge falls so low on our list is that a visit to the World Heritage Site almost goes without saying!

It’s a 5,000-year-old monument on Salisbury Plain near Wiltshire, England. The outer ring of stones is vertical, standing about four meters tall and just over two meters wide. Each piece weighs an estimated 25 tons. It’s believed to come from the Neolithic and Bronze Ages.

It’s perhaps one of the most well-known landmarks in all of the UK. Since 1882, it’s been under government protection, attesting to how prized a space it is. Do the tour in a helicopter to one-up the pedestrians. 

A 60 minute tour (30 minutes flying) provides breathtaking aerial views. You’ll be able to catch a glance at the burial mounds throughout Salisbury, giving you a better perspective on the area’s spiritual significance. On the helicopter tour, you’ll be able to scope out the Stones at Avebury or Salisbury Catherda’s spire. 

Hint: If you’re into crop circles, research more about Wiltshire. Locals have booked tours just to get a bird’s eye view of the streets they know and love!

8. Go the Cultural Route in Glasgow

In Scotland, one of the land’s most vibrant cities is Glasgow, where there’s no shortage of activities. Although number eight on the list, as far as “things to do” goes, this place is tops.

Glasgow is a large place with various neighborhoods, so it’s easy to make a vacation out of exploring each and every one. In fact, architecture is a major crowd-pleaser.

What’s on the agenda here? You have to check the calendar before heading to Glasgow. There are always plays, sporting events, and festivals happening throughout the city. When in doubt, book a tour. With Glasgow Gander, tourists can enjoy famous sights like the Royal Exchange Square or the Glasgow City Chambers. Don’t forget to visit High Street, too.

9. Shine Boldly in Brighton

June is pride month, and there’s no better place to ring in the season than Brighton, England. The city’s tourism promoters welcome people from the LGBT community and beyond. The area to be spotted is Kemptown, where the streets are intricately dotted with restaurants, delis, hotels, and pubs.

Brighton is known for its large-scale Pride festival, one of the biggest in the UK. The event maintains a prosocial purpose which makes it all the more meaningful to attend.

There’s even a local radio station dedicated to queer audiences. Any month of year warrants a visit to The Queen’s Arms. Here, the name of the game is drag. It feels like a hidden gem even though everybody knows about the hijinx and fun that ensue under the glimmering ceiling each evening.

Activities vary night to night as do the crowds. One day you might find karaoke and another a cabaret show. Long story short, what we like about Brighton is that people are free to be themselves.

BONUS: Don’t Forget Dublin (not in the UK)

Dublin presents a major draw for people who love Irish history and Irish beer. It’s the capital of the Republic of Ireland, located on the River Liffey on the East Coast. 

It’s not part of the UK, but it’s still worth checking out while you’re in the neighborhood, so to speak. It’s an old city. Buildings like the Dublin Castle were brought to light in the 13th century.

Another can’t-miss sight is St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Large city parks make for excellent walking, even on drizzly days. If that’s too dreary for you, the National Museum of Ireland provides an excellent secondary option.

Travelers might also consider paying the Guinness Storehouse a faithful visit. Here, the company’s history is told in such a way that homage is paid to the famous beer. Beyond the history lesson, culinary options steal the scene. In the onsite bars, their menus are open to all, tour or not. Burgers and flatbreads provide a cure for the munchies while specifically offering tastes that suit Guinness beers well.

Don’t skip dessert! Nothing pairs better with a Guinness than their Bailey’s cheesecake. From Manchester to Oxford to Brighton and back again, all of the stops in the UK (and Ireland) are sure to please. Keep your eye on the pandemic restrictions, so you’ll be ready for the green light.
